MP Materials (MP): Rare Earth Momentum Gets a Major U.S. Boost

MP Materials (NYSE: MP) entered August 2025 with one of the strongest strategic stories in the U.S. critical-minerals sector. The company operates the Mountain Pass rare earth mine in California and is working to build a fully domestic supply chain for the magnets used in defense systems, electric vehicles, robotics, electronics, and other advanced technologies.

The story became much more important in July. MP Materials announced a multibillion-dollar partnership with the U.S. Department of Defense that included government investment, a 10-year price floor for NdPr products, and a 10-year magnet offtake agreement tied to a new domestic manufacturing facility.

Stronger Numbers Behind the Story

MP’s August 7 earnings report gave investors more than just a strategic narrative.

Second-quarter revenue increased 84% year over year to $57.4 million, while NdPr production reached a record 597 metric tons, up 119%. Rare earth oxide production climbed 45%, and NdPr sales volumes more than tripled from the prior-year period. The Magnetics segment also generated $19.9 million in revenue and $8.1 million in adjusted EBITDA.

Those numbers suggest that MP Materials is not simply benefiting from political interest in rare earths. Its underlying production and downstream magnet business are also beginning to scale.

Apple Adds Another Long-Term Catalyst

The Department of Defense agreement was quickly followed by a $500 million partnership with Apple.

Under the deal, MP Materials will supply Apple with U.S.-made rare earth magnets produced from recycled materials. The company plans to expand its Fort Worth facility and build a commercial-scale recycling line at Mountain Pass, with magnet shipments expected to begin in 2027.

Together, the Apple and Defense Department agreements strengthen the case that MP could become an important domestic supplier in a market that has historically depended heavily on China.

The Trading Setup

The fundamental story is clearly bullish, but the stock had already experienced a powerful move following the July announcements. That means chasing strength without confirmation could increase risk.

For a new position, I would prefer to see MP consolidate its gains and confirm support before entering. A controlled pullback followed by renewed buying pressure would offer a cleaner setup than buying after a sharp headline-driven surge.

The key point is simple: the business outlook improved dramatically, but price still determines the quality of the entry.

Bottom Line

MP Materials has moved from being primarily a rare earth mining story to becoming a strategic U.S. manufacturing and supply-chain play.

Record NdPr production, strong revenue growth, the Department of Defense partnership, and Apple’s $500 million commitment give the company several meaningful catalysts heading into the second half of 2025.

Outlook: Bullish, but wait for price confirmation before chasing the move.

For investors interested in critical minerals, defense supply chains, and domestic manufacturing, MP Materials deserves a place on the watchlist.

Happy Trading!
